For students, learning to manage finances early on is an invaluable first step to preparing for a more stable future. By managing your finances, you can manage your income and expenses more effectively. Once you’ve created your budget plan, you’ll only need to make minor adjustments in your day-to-day spending.

Here are 5 ways to manage finances for college students:

1. Make a Budget

Creating a budget is the foundation of managing finances. Start by listing all your sources of income, such as pocket money from your parents, income from a part-time job, or scholarship funds. Next, write down all your expenses and divide them into categories such as fixed expenses and variable expenses (groceries, entertainment, or personal care). Use a money management tool or app like Money+ or even a simple spreadsheet to track each transaction. This can give you a clear picture of where your money is going.

2. Limit Unnecessary Spending

Cut down on unnecessary purchases like eating out or impulse buys, and focus on more affordable options like cooking at home. Cooking at home is not only cheaper but also healthier. Another useful strategy is the “30-day rule” if you want to buy something non-essential, wait for 30 days. If you still feel the item is important or valuable, then you can buy it without guilt.

3. Use Student Discounts

Many businesses, including software companies, stores, and entertainment providers, offer student discounts. For example, some software such as Microsoft 365 and Adobe Creative Cloud have student pricing, also streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music also offer student packages, and even some local businesses may offer discounted prices or ticket prices for students.

4. Create an Emergency Fund

An emergency fund is money set aside for unexpected costs, such as unexpected medical expenses or travel. Even small, consistent contributions can grow over time. As a student, you don’t need to save a huge amount, starting small is fine. You can start saving as much as Rp20,000-50,000 per week, that way you can accumulate a fairly large amount.

5. Learn about Credit and Debt

If you have a credit card, pay off the bill in full every month to avoid interest charges. This will build a good credit score, which is important for future loans. Always be cautious about making loans, avoid taking out unnecessary loans, and always prioritize paying off high-interest debt first if you have multiple loans or debts. Consider creating a debt repayment plan early to stay organized and not miss deadlines.

|

Writer: Fasiha Alya Shifa/Physiotherapy’24

Editor: Naira Afza Salsabilla/Nutrition Science’23

Source: https://www.tagar.id Managing finances is very important, everyone should master this skill.
