(Kartasura, October 25, 2023) The rainstorm that hit the city of Kartasura on Wednesday afternoon (25/10/2023) caused a tree to collapse and hit several roofs of the motorcycle parking lot next to the Faculty of Pharmacy building, Campus 1, University Muhammadiyah of Surakarta. The collapse of this tree also resulted in dozens of parked motorbikes being badly damaged, and disadvantaged students. The evacuation of the motorcycles was immediately carried out by the campus, such as parking lot guards, security guards and several volunteers from students. Muhammadiyah Disaster Management Center and LazisMU officers also came to help evacuate dozens of motorbikes.

This incident began when a rainstorm in the afternoon which occurred around 15:30 resulted in the collapse of one of the trees in the parking lot, the collapse of the tree made one by one the UMS parking lot blocks were nudged until they finally fell and fell on the motorbike parked on the land.

Quoted from Tribun Solo, Vice Chancellor II of University Muhammadiyah of Surakarta, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Da’i validated the news. He said that based on the campus investigation, there were about 4 parking blocks that collapsed due to the fallen tree.

“Approximately 50 student motorbikes were hit by the roof. Some of the damage is severe and some is light,” said UMS Vice Chancellor II when contacted by DetikJateng, Thursday (26/10/2023).

It was observed that it took 5 days to clean up the remaining fallen trees and debris from the parking lot building so that it could be reused by students. Currently, the parking lot location of UMS pharmacy campus 1 has been cleared and several blocks can be used to accommodate motorbikes again. But still, knowing the many losses experienced by students because of their damaged motorbikes, the campus promises to provide compensation guarantees to students to be given compensation in accordance with applicable regulations.

Quoted from DetikJateng, Vice Rector II said that the campus had recorded the damaged student motorcycles. “We have asked for the motorcycles to be identified, then we will provide assistance in repairing the motorcycles,” he said.

However, the guarantee of compensation offered by the campus to students who were victims of losses due to the tree fall incident has not fully reached the students. According to the LPM Pabelan article, only 3 out of 32 motorcycles affected by the tree fall incident have submitted claims, this is because many other students do not understand the procedures for obtaining assistance from the campus.

Hopefully for the future, students who suffer losses due to this incident can immediately get help from the campus to repair their motorbikes. And incidents like this do not happen again, even though this incident is a natural disaster but it is hoped that in the future the campus parking lot building can be made more sturdy so that students also feel safe to park on their beloved campus.
